Amazon's Cloud storage: the making of music and revolution

When it comes to global digital entertainment distribution, usually only two great powers. Of course, one is Apple. The second is at Amazon.com, which made headlines in the world of tech, March 29, with the two new Web-based services.

Amazon Cloud drive is "a personal disk drive in the cloud" that allows you to store up to 5 gigabytes of photos, music, documents and other files with the possibility to pay for more capacity. And Amazon Cloud Player is a music player — available in the browser version and one of the Android phones — smart tags that stream tunes to your computer or the headphone. (Read to keep Uncle Sam Amazon user account ").

These songs may be for you to stream MP3 files that you moved Cloud drive. But they also are not only you can purchase at Amazon.com. In fact, when you purchase music, you can choose to transfer immediately the Cloud instead of the drive to be downloaded to your computer.

At first blush, there is no change in the world-all about Amazon's declarations. In view of the large number of companies already dole out of gigabytes of storage space online for free downloading of music and long been purchased — as long as they are not copy-protected — and then sends them back to the computers and other devices. All new services in the Amazon do not have to make the process faster and easier.

By Mashing up but there are a number of streaming music and online storage, Amazon runs a technology consisting of a blend of chocolate and peanut butter equivalent: it turned out that the two great tastes you can taste even better together. It also rattled the music industry, which is not so sure that the company has to deposit it sells online, instead of the load, they drive the songs from the clients.

Is not eye-catching large Amazon is the first major music seller, to give customers a plunk songs purchased directly from the Web. Movies, you can buy it in order, for example, a video service from the Service Pack has already been to stay with Amazon servers, so they are safe and sound, even if the hard disk crashes. And the Kindle e-books get automatically liked in the online archive, so you can upload them to the Kindle e-reader, smart phone or your computer — or all of the above. (Read the "E-book Era is here: the best sellers to go Digital.")

Persistent rumors say that Apple intends to use the Humongous data center, it is built in the North Carolina-yet-unannounced streaming services, as the case may be, the same as those from Amazon. Now, even if it sells most of its services, such as the old downloads that are more difficult to manage files, which will remain a net than. (One Notable exception is the new Apple TV, which is not in the local storage of its own.)

Amazon: n approach considers less than Apple's future. Back when most people owned one computer and keep it all digital days onward, all your content to save locally may have made sense — at least as long as the act was adopted in conjunction with and as the regular backup operations. Today, even though many of us have more than one computer, the smart tag phones, tablets and even Internet-connected televisions. We do not want to be easily available in one of the entertainment of the gadget. We want to see that it is available to all of them. Keeping the Internet makes it possible to take advantage of that.

True, the local storage is not going away anytime soon. First of all, the cost of hard disks to keep their cloud-based offset lead the giant: you can buy a 1 TB hard disk drive of less than $ 100. Stuff the same amount of the saving of the Amazon Cloud-drive for $ 1,000 — you pay per year. But online storage costs should come down over time. And Amazon does not count against the storage of the quotient of the buy, and that it is prudent to save the music: it only needs to keep one copy of the paragraph, even though the gazillion people buy it.
